Understanding Al-Ma'un
Al-Ma'un connects denial of accountability with harsh treatment of the orphan, failure to encourage feeding the poor, careless prayer, showing off and withholding even small acts of help. This page intentionally separates the translated Quran text from IHSAYA's short educational summary.
The Surah refuses to separate religious claim from treatment of orphans and the poor.
Neglect and showing off can hollow out an outward act of worship.
Withholding even ordinary assistance is included in the Surah's moral criticism.
Editorial basis: the Quran text and attributed translation on this page. See IHSAYA Sources for the editorial sourcing standard.
Reflection prompts
- Does my worship make me more attentive to people in need?
- What 'small kindness' do I withhold because it seems unimportant?
