Understanding Al-Masad

Al-Masad condemns Abu Lahab and his wife for active hostility toward the Prophet and makes clear that wealth and social standing cannot rescue a person from the consequences of deliberate opposition to truth. This page intentionally separates the translated Quran text from IHSAYA's short educational summary.

Status cannot save character

Family position and wealth do not cancel personal accountability.

Active hostility has consequences

The Surah addresses deliberate support for persecution rather than passive disagreement.

Wealth cannot purchase final safety

Material resources are explicitly described as unable to protect from judgment.

For detailed interpretation, historical discussion or legal/religious conclusions, consult reliable tafsir and qualified scholarship. This section is IHSAYA editorial/reflection material, not tafsir, a fatwa or a substitute for qualified scholarship.

Editorial basis: the Quran text and attributed translation on this page. See IHSAYA Sources for the editorial sourcing standard.

Reflection prompts

  • What status or relationship am I tempted to treat as protection from personal responsibility?
  • How do I make sure disagreement never becomes active harm or persecution?
